I would be happy to put my 2 cents worth on the design when my back gets better.

There's nothing magical about the bucket sub being in a bucket. It's a slightly over .5ft3 box, build one however you like.... If you make it forward firing rather than upward, you don't have to worry about dead bugs rattling around ;)

If the sound were bad could you blame it on the stink bugs?

If you are interested in a modified CBT24 check out this unlimited category winner at this year's Midwest Audiofest.

Thank you for the reference. What would you think of them for club speakers?

Like any other speakers they have pluses and minuses. When I heard them they had very good control of radiation pattern which Don explains in his papers. Where they had shortcomings was in bass extension and dynamic range. Don now suggests a subwoofer for them and provides EQ curves for miniDSP. The sub will greatly help bass extension and dynamic range as well if you high pass them. That will limit cone excursion resulting in lower distortion at higher levels. They sell it in kit form and would be an appropriate DIY project because we would need to build the sub as well. It is also not a speaker you see everywhere.

I'm including two photos from MWAF 2017. One shows the audition room for the speakers and you can see the CBT24 in the room with a Dayton sub that was used for background music between competition auditions. The other photo is of one of the entries that was superb called the Gandalf which was a different take on the original CBTs.

Here is my current configuration -

I don't think the cbt's were ever intended to be used without a subwoofer. With the cbt36k's in my man cave I can detect no problems with dynamic range. I don't know about a significantly larger space. I would not call my system portable by an stretch of the imagination partly due to the subwoofers. Note that I am currently using the miniDSP openDRC-DA8 for signal processing. The input is a coaxial spdif cable which eliminates the analog to digital conversion. Also the processor has a remote volume control. I have also sent quite a few emails to Don Keele when configuring the system and he was quite helpful.

I've known Don for over 30 years and he is a really genuine, kind, and knowledgeable person. That is a very good combination. Your use of the CBT36 with the subs and DSP is right on. One thing I noticed when he first auditioned them to a meeting of the Boston Audio Society that I attended is that they seemed a bit forward in the high end. It may have been the room so I would be interested to know if you have tailored the high end at all.

I have yet to fully tame the frequency response. Yes the high end is hot. I am using REW to make measurements. I just need the time to tweak things. For video plus audio especially movies they disappear. Per Don Keele's suggestion they are configured as a three way stereo system not a 2.1 system.
