How do you get around it and/or what could you use?

If you’ve got a windows machine with access to the same storage, there are a lot of choices. Exact Audio Copy is a good place to start.

Foobar2000 works great for me. I know it doesn't get a lot of love around here, but it will do darn near anything music file related.
