Years ago, I visited the International Piano Archives at College Park. I can't remember if they had a Welte Mignon piano but they did have an Ampico. The bloke in charge at the time, Donald Manildi, played some of the famous pianists who produced Ampico rolls such as Joseph Levine and Rachmaninov.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D6VrcW4SgwIt was interesting to see the keys going up and down and it looked like he had the normal 10 fingers.
Rachmaninov was totally different. He had enormous, powerful hands and it looked like he had 10 fingers on each hand.

He then told me that Tamas had been there the day before recording on the Yamaha player piano. I missed out on being able to thank the man. I remember that he wore the most highly polished patent leather shoes I had ever seen.
