What makes guitar speakers different from woofers and sub-woofers?
Basically, all drivers are different. Some of the characteristics of old drivers for guitar amps are that they we designed for high efficiency and had high power handling for producing high SPLs. The woofers did not go especially low and they had limited xMax. For example, a typical 12" guitar driver would have around 2 -3mm xMax where a current subwoofer will have around 15 - 20mm xMax. They also were heavy in the distortion area that in combination with the box designs and amplifier distortions gave the different amp models characteristics sounds. Now it is common to reproduce those different sound characteristics when mastering with plug ins for the mixers that give the engineer a choice of "amp" sounds that can be added to the direct feed from the guitar. Other things that were used to produce special characteristics were different interface boxes between the guitar pickup and the amp known as DI (Direct Injection) boxes and also add on circuits like fuzz boxes that added modifications to the signal.
