I have various Windows CDs, or I can use Linux. Virtual to be safe.

Maybe the answer here is for Steve to just get an abacus and call it quits. ;)

The question is are you CD's OEM or portable copies of windows? If they are OEM they can only be installed on a given piece of hardware. Again a virtual machine is a different piece of hardware from the original installation even if the hardware is identical (don't ask me why). Do you know what type of window's installation CD's you have? Also are we talking about some version of windows other than 10?

Original OEM disks of Windows 7 and Windows XP. Windows 7 has 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

Unless one of the the CD's was not previously used to install Windows you only option (without buying new Windows) is to have a dual boot system (I don't make these rules).

That is not virtual. That is dual boot. One operating system is not running under another one. One or the other is running at a given time.

Please go to the Virtualbox link I posted a few days ago and read on how to download the application, install it, and setup a virtual container for a guest OS. You should be able to install from original installation disk for a non-OEM version of Windows, I believe it will recognize the CD and install from there. BUT, you HAVE to read the documentation.

There is a old SysAdmin saying...RTFM...Read The (ahem) FINE Manual.

I have a Dell mini laptop. I don't believe it will run regular Linux. Is there a lighter version of Linux or something else that can run on those mini laptops with only 1GB of memory?

Google "lightweight Linux Distributions". You're going to need a 32-bit version for that antique. It's probably upgrade-able to 2GB max...
