This article is interesting about flying. The main problem is not the air but the tray table.

There is a chance that we may be upgraded into a better than cattle class section with less crowding. The flight from SFO to Sydney will only have Australian citizens and dependents on it because of strict entry requirements into Australia. There will be no US tourists and that will continue until a vaccine becomes available.

Trays can be wiped down. As many times we have gone to Germany, my mom always had various wipes in her purse. That is the first thing we did on the plane.

Each person will have to decide for themselves how seriously to take the current COVID guidelines. Our public health response has been less than stellar and and the media has cried wolf too many times. But every time you expose yourselves to other individuals, you are rolling the dice. Going to the gym right now is not playing it safe. Go online and order an indoor spinning cycle and some weights if you want to work out and stay safe. That is what we did and we are lifetime gym rats who miss working out a LOT!

I'll skip this meet but hope to see you all in the not too distant future either when the numbers look a lot better, or we have a safe/effective vaccine or a real treatment protocol that prevents serious illness.

The really scary bit is getting off the plane and eventually arriving at the quarantine hotel. People are anxious and I am concerned that social distancing may not be as it should. The air on the planes should be well filtered, but who knows what the air filtering will be on the buses that take all the passengers and luggage to the quarantine hotel. I plan to get some disposable gloves from the infusion center just before we leave.

Actually -- commercial aircraft were not fitted with decent air filters until 2002 production. Most of the aircraft out there are 20 to 30 years old. Mixing ventilation is the primary technique used to provide a mixture of outside fresh air and recirculated air from the cabin, with different ratios, to the aircraft occupants after being filtered. To quote one study: "Air usually enters at specified volumetric rates from supply inlets located above or below the luggage compartment in the cabin depending on the aircraft type. It then circulates through the cabin under the influence of inertial, viscous, and body (such as buoyancy induced by the thermal plumes from the occupants' bodies) and exits through the exhaust slots (or return) found at the floor level on the two sides of the cabin. Created by this ventilation strategy, the well-mixed environment helps dilute and disperse infectious organisms and contaminants within the cabin." There wasn’t really any research on the topic until the last 15 years. Later production aircraft are better in terms of 50-50 ratio fresh air to recirculated air.

This is not a good time for air travel. I recommend getting the most aggressive face mask that money can buy (with no guarantee of safety). Airlines are bragging that they are very diligent about de-contamination of the cabins. That lasts only as long until the first passengers board. And what about the boarding Que? And to add insult to injury I seriously doubt airport maintenance crews can or will replace cabin air filters as a pre-flight routine upon during each transition as one can with a modern car.

And how long does one wait to fly anywhere? A vaccine is a only a pipe-dream right now even though many countries are trying their best to develop one. Sorry to blather on, but the only times I've gotten sick was after a business flight -- every damn time!

Our first plane, an A319 from BWI to SFO leaves at 7 am so I am hoping it has had a good thorough overnight clean. It's an inconvenient time to fly so hopefully it will be less crowded.

Here is United's boarding process.

We've made some temporary changes to our boarding process to promote social distancing. Following pre-boarding, we will board back to front by rows instead of by groups, so please listen for your row to be called before lining up at the gate instead of using the group number on your boarding pass.

The plane across the Pacific is a 787 so should have good air circulation.

The state I am moving to has announced relaxing restrictions on July 10. It will allow people from other states to enter QLD except those from Victoria which is experiencing a second spike. The border controls are still in place.

The eased restrictions will allow:

Up to 100 people at funerals, wedding ceremonies and receptions and private gatherings in homes

Nightclubs, casinos, gaming and gambling venues and food courts to reopen

Contact community sport, both indoor and outdoor, to resume with an approved COVID-safe plan

Events with more than 10,000 people with a COVID Safe Event Plan approved by the Chief Health Officer

Up to 25,000 spectators or 50 per cent capacity at Queensland's major sporting facilities

Up to 50 per cent of capacity at concert venues, theatres and auditoriums, or one person per four square metres

Office workers to return to their place of work

So life is returning to normal in Oz. I suspect that if all goes well and Queenslanders can keep those nasty Victorians at bay, more restrictions will be lifted by the time we arrive in mid August.

By the way, while wearing a mask is important to protect yourself from others, it's even more important to protect others from you.

I am not suggesting anyone to ignore the COVID-19 guidelines. Just saying there lot of BS in the media about COVID-19.

For example, please keep talking about increased infections in the south no one mentions the fact that mortality rate is not increasing, which is a good news.

A lot of people still dying every day in Texas and Florida. Then again, it's too soon to tell since you can linger for weeks. Also, there's significant evidence of permanent damage to lungs and other organs in people who recover. A narrator friend of mine, a formerly healthy guy, is still struggling to get his breath and his energy back two months after "recovering" and has to limit his work schedule.

Numbers are looking good in MD and VA because people are lying low. I hope it stays that way. We were doing great here in Oregon until we "opened up." Now we're spiking again.

Hey, the "open up" crowd says vulnerable people should just stay at home. Well, that's what a lot of us older folks are doing. So don't complain when we make that choice. ;-)

Grover,
Everything has to be examined in context.
While the number of confirmed cases are going up in southern stated, mortalities are not. As a matter of fact, mortality rates are going down.

Regarding MD and VA numbers, I posted a 2 minute video. Very informative.
Also, if you remember about a month ago, NY Gov. was complaining that bulk of the new cases are from people who were quarantined at home. Something to think about in light of the 2min video.

In 1997, 66,000 people died of common flu in US. FLU turns into pneumonia in older people who may not recover.

According to reports, the potency of COVID-19 is reducing. Danger is still there, but the latest news is good.

Don’t believe what the news orgs tell. Do your own due deligence.

Take a look at COVID-19 weekly deaths put out by CDC. Look at column 2. Don’t you say, the tread is good news?
