I got tinnitus about 25 years ago when I took her up the clock tower in Brisbane. The bells struck at the hour and I covered her ears but had to leave my right ear exposed. For quite some time afterwards, I could tell how loud the Philly Orchestra was playing by when the tinnitus started up. I don't seem to suffer so much now.
Since the subject has digressed to 'artists you were lucky enough to see', my top four were
Gilels in Copenhagen 1974
Michelangeli in Geneva 1974
Richter in London 1989
Pavarotti in Philly in a recorded performance of Il Palliacci 1993 (our seats cost under $10 each)
The best description of the Richter piano recital setting was 'He came on stage like a butler who has poisoned the port'. There are some youtube videos of the performance including this encore version on Chopin Op 10 # 4 which brought the house down.
