Alnico magnets inherently have the ability to minimize flux modulation due to the audio signals. In the early days of speakers this lowered the distortion compared to ceramics. However all modern drivers of any substance use shorting rings on the pole pieces that achieve the same effect of eliminating flux modulation in a much more predictable manner while retaining the higher strength of ceramics. Alnico magnets are a throwback to the old days before people realized what could be achieved with properly designed shorting rings. Where Alnico shines is in very high temperature applications where they retain what strength they do have. However at temperatures where ceramics would fail, the surround and spider have long since gone up in smoke so that high temperature rating is of no value in speakers. There is in my opinion no reason to use Alnico with today's technology of driver building. Tom |
