WTB: Peerless Output Power Transformer 16458

September 15th, 2020, 9:51 pm

Hi All - I’m on the hunt for a Peerless OPT 16458 to go into a Heathkit W5M Mono. Thanks in advance.

This offering might take care of your problem:

Thanks Walt - I saw that but it's a 16309.

I get that. I believe it was designed for a WM-5a. If the difference between WM-5a and WM-5 has nothing to do with the transformer, then you nailed it.

Maybe a little homework to find out the differences. At least it is a Peerless suited to service with KT-88s.

I just did a little "homework." (I've been cooped up too long) I will just quote the guy and Vacuum Tube Valley magazine because they appear to have been diligent with regards to their findings:

" The Heathkit W-5M was supplied with two diferent Peerless output transformers during its production run. Although both transformers are excellent there might be some slight audible differences between them and your stereo pair can not be considered as well matched. Also, the smaller (16309) transformer is know to be failure prone and many of them have open (half) primary windings.

Here's a quote from VTV Issue 2 Vol.1 regarding the W-5M:

"... Through 1957, W-5M's featured the larger Peerless 16458 output transformer. From 1957 through 1963, the newer design and smalller 16309 Peerless transformer was employed. Though more common, the 16309 is no slouch. It has exceptional characteristics and performance. Some Heath experts claim that the 16309 Peerless has more extended highs..."

"As the transformers are electrically and physically different you may expect some differences, but this is greatly compensated by the 18.1 dB global NFB applied around the entire amplifier, including the OPT."

"Still, I don't like the idea of a (stereo) pair of amps with different OPT's..."

Or to shorten the story -- keep looking for the exact replacement. Apparently Heathkit needed to upgrade the OPT because of problems with the original.

Nothing comes easy in this hobby. :angry-banghead:

Re-read what you quoted, looks like the later (probably cheaper) version is the one with problems...

So the 16458 is prone for problems or the 309? I thought that the 309 was the one with issues but sounded better? Thanks

The 16458 came first with the following "upgrade", the 309, being prone to problems. I had it bass ackwards. The good one (16458) was used through 1957 then after 1957 the smaller transformer was used -- the one with problems.

Like I said -- I've been cooped up too long. :text-givemebeer:
