Need 1GB or 2GB DDR for an old Dell.

Could use another hard drive as well. It has some type of IDE adapter piece that slides into the side of the laptop/motherboard.

Might be a PCMCIA slot for external devices, like sound cards, USB connections, WiFi adapters and hard drives.

There are different styles of DDR laptop memory SIMMs, so you need to know how many pins are on the SIMM that your machine needs. IIRC there is 208 pin and 200 pin styles for PC laptops.

Or put another way -- the devil is the details. Not all memory modules are the same. He needs to not only identify exactly what his computer requires, but also how much RAM it will support.
