I'm Will. I work at Linear Tube Audio, and I'm the only guy who can't build an amp. Hopefully reading threads here will enlighten me as to the finer points of sound-making devices.

Hey Will.

Three starter suggestions:

1) Build an inexpensive kit to hone your skills, learn what is involved, understand what the parts look like, how they connect, etc.

2) Come to a meet to see, hear and understand the challenge.

3) Read, either in book form, or on line, primers on electrical theory and applications.

Stuart nailed it! Do your homework! The better your understanding of basic electronic theory and how parts and circuits work the closer you get to not only being able to modify production equipment for much improved performance but building from scratch. I've been at the hands-on aspect of the hobby since age 16 and I am still learning and enjoying the ripe fragrance of solder resin.

It is especially satisfying when you attend an audio show -- audition the best of the best -- and then come home not feeling inadequate, but proud of your accomplishments.
