Actually, I'm thinking about building a SUT for my Denon 103R. Just haven't figured out how to yet (e.g., which transformers to use, what other parts are needed, etc.). Thanks for the welcome![/quote]

A few of us have Hashimoto SUTs. I have HM-3s, Roscoe has HM-X and I think Charlie has HM-7, IIRC. They are all excellent, the '7s being the best.

Be sure to load the Denon heavily, no more than 100Ω, much lower works well also, to tame the HF. Resistor quality is critical here.

Good luck

Depending on the transformers you use, you may be better off with the loading on the primary or secondary, you'll have to experiment and see which works best for your specific transformer....

K&K Audio provides lots of choises from budget to ultimate.
They sell kits and raw Lundalh xformers.
I used one of thier lower cost xformers for years only to be bested by Bob's Devices Sky 20 which retails for over $1200
Thier website is full of white papers and suggestions
A very good place to start, Kevin is very helpful

Thanks Stuart, Roscoe and Paul,

Looks like it's time to do some serious investigating.

Sorry I should have supplied the K&K Audio url
http://www.kandkaudio.com/

I believe its worth a look

I recently got my modded Denon103r back from SoundSmith. I had the cantilever and stylus replaced with their ruby cantilever and line contact tip.

First listen is very good. Getting much more detail, too much bass. I probably need to remove a bit of the extra mass I added, and or fiddle with VTA.

Very musical but still lacking compared to my Alpha Genesis 1000 the went belly up a while back.

I will be putting an Ortofon ST80 on ebay next week. The Bob's devices put it to shame in mine and a couple of other systems I heard it on.

Thanks for the link. I have a Soundsmith Ruby OCL on a Grace F9 (in a SME Type II improved) and their ruby elliptical on an Ortofon X3 (used with a SME M2-9). Definitely more detail but neither has showed much change in bass output. I've always been curious as to whether and how much the retipping and cantilever change affects compliance.

The way I understand it he doesn't touch the suspension. Just cuts off the old cantilever and inserts and glues in the new one. I have been playing around with mass loading. I am assuming that if you go too far though will loose definition and muddy up the signal. There is just so much going on with matching cartridge to arm/turntable and alignment that it is hard to really understand what is going on. Am I getting better definition because of the new stylus or did I get the alignment better

Oh. I'm probably going to be a member of the "get beat up" club. Hope it's not too small.
