There is plenty of discussion of DAC's for converting digital to analog but what is considered suitable equipment (ADC's) to convert vinly to digital files. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I use an Asus Xonar ST card in a computer. The card has been modified, primarily for playback but the benefits will help with recording. I've also outfitted it with machined RCA jacks. It will rip up to 24/192. You're welcome to come over and hear the results. You'll also be able to hear the results Saturday at Sashi's.

I have recently switched to the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Gen 2 to get my audio in and out of my laptop when testing speakers and electronics. The performance is excellent and it is moderately priced at $150 on Amazon. It even comes with some recording and mastering applications included in that price. Here is a link.

You guys are into audio porn. As much as I have done to improve digital playback those damn licorice pizzas still deliver the goods and put you there in the venue.

With regard to you Xonar Essence ST card.

1. How do you think the DAC's in the ST card compare to external DAC's.

2. Is you Xonar Essence ST card the one with the 7.1 channel daughter board and if so where did you purchase it?

1 - In numerous shoot outs it does quite well. You're welcome to come hear for yourself

2 - It is the card that can accommodate the daughter card, I purchased them a while ago and have extras if you're interested.

A the moment I have a Xonar D2 and a Emotiva UMC-200. I will first try the D2 for an ADC and try both the D2 and the UMC-200 as DAC's. I my system I wish to do everthing via my htpc -

1. Running Ubuntu 16.04 with alsa (pulse audio turned off).
2. Using Kodi as a audio/visual server.
3. Use ecasound as a dsp equalizer/crossover (postprocess Kodi audio output).
4. Use the D2 line in as my phono input (turntable has built in phono preamp).
5. Route D2 line in to ecasound post processing to play records live (write add on to Kodi so I can do everything audio/visual via Kodi).

Note that the UMC-200 has a direct mode that disables all dsp processing so it can be use purely as a DAC with the advantage that the analog volume control and the analog channel amplitude trims still work (digital input is via hdmi).

I am using Richard Taylor's tutorial on how to use ecasound to implement a dsp crossover.

He uses it for his Linkwitz Labs’ LX521 loudspeakers -

I use Windows 7 Media Center for all TV in the house. The main PC can record six channels at a time, limited by the number of tuners connected, four of them can be premium channels. Plus we can play back a recorded show at the same time. I know this is impossible since a PC can not keep up with the playback of audio, but somehow it works. It has 15TB of hard drive for storage of shows. As long as the recorded show does not have copy protection on it it can be watched anywhere in the house.

Kodi is installed on the PC, and it has a BluRay drive installed so we can watch pretty much anything. It also has Foobar2000 installed so we can listen to anything in the music library.

It's fascinating to me how a digitally recorded or mastered album sounds better if:

  • the record company converts it back to analog, applies the inverse RIAA filter, stamps it onto vinyl so it can be played back with a mechanical cartridge which is then amplified, sometimes through a transformer, and put through an RIAA filter

than

  • keeping the original digital signal digital and intact until it gets converted to analog in a DAC in your system

I realize that the bit rate and depth may be different from the master than what you receive, but it's still a lot less mucked up than going through vinyl. I also realize that a lot of records have never been in the digital domain, although a lot of the re-releases have been digitized before going back to analog.

....For the first time in my life I think that analog has lost. I never would have believed it could happen. If anybody is interested they can stop by for a listen after I get back from Grover's (I'm heading out there to see him next week). I don't have to much space but one or two at a time could be accommodated. I haven't listened to analog in months -- hi res digital is more than I could ever have imagined.

From the computer thread that has gone quiet recently. Not saying digital is better, just saying it's not what it used to be.
