I have not auditioned decent digital playback at anyone's home or the Capital Audiofest. WHY?!!

And why does the British press constantly bad-mouth digital in any form? Even one of the Absolute Sound reviewers had negative comments.

You haven't been to my house lately.

Dave's digital playback setup sounds very good to me.

My system is:

> Dell Core 2 PC running Windows 7 gets files from another computer, plays using Foobar2000
> Control is through a laptop and remote desktop, I prefer a keyboard and mouse/touchpad to a touch screen
> USB out of the PC to Holo Audio Spring Level 3 DAC
> DAC to DIY preamp/crossover - four differential inputs, analog volume control - all controlled from within Foobar2000
> Pre/Cross out to Mirror Image Audio amplifiers - two channels for subs low passed at 68Hz, two channels for main full range
> Main speaker - NHT M6 with modified crossover and Aurum Cantus G1 ribbon instead of the original domes
> Sub - two NHT Sub2i with the amp removed and being driving by Mirror Image, two 12" per channel
> Line level cables are homemade from Audioquest S-5 svideo cable and Eichmann Silver Bullet RCA plugs
> Speaker cables are 18/8 thermostat wire - 8 solid 18 gauge non-plated copper per connection = 9 gauge

I've only heard one other system that I believe comes close and that's Walt's. The sound stage here is as good or better than any I've ever heard. Anyone interested is welcome to come audition, no large groups though.

Actually if you heard my DIY DAC it sounds very good. Other issues screwed up the weekend. If anyone is interested in evaluating it I can bring it over

I'd be happy to hear it. I can switch on the fly between up to four DACs.

I can bring it over any weekend except Saturday the 23rd and coming long weekend. Do you want to arrange a shootout as we discussed? We can also compare foobar and MPD, and if Jim is up to it, even Sonore.

Sounds good. I'm available until the 23rd, I'm out of town from then until 10/1.
