Post subject:  pushing the 5881

Hi,
Thoughts on running a new production 5881 (Psvane) on a McIntosh ms240? the Mac's B+ is 430V. According to the old TungSol datasheet, the 5881 can cope with 400V. However, some 5881's are rated for higher B+. I can't find anything on the Psvane (though I have a question in to the North American distributor). Other than flames and the smell of ozone, are their warning signs that the tube is failing? I've been playing the Psvanes in the Mac for about 8 hours. It's the best sounding of the current 6L6 family in my system, ranking just a smidge behind the SED 6L6GC.

I am not sure why the 6L6 is OK in the MAC what with a 430-vdc plate supply, but MAC's other recommended tube was the 7027.

As far as I am concerned, based on personal experience, a brace of vintage GEC KT-66's with the carbon-coated glass would transform your MAC.

And to add to the desirability -- those "grandfather" KT-66s are rated at a minimum of 8,000 hours MTBF.
