No surprise. Especially when you consider -- as just one example -- an Everest recording done on sprocketed 35-mm magnetic film in 1959 that has been repressed with a modernized tape drive and modern cutting amplifiers. WOW! The sound reproduction is as good as current efforts -- if not better.

Yea, that article by Heath was a bit lame, although it did hit some of the high points of vinyl vs. compressed. The story on Everest records, which I did a presentation on, is a really complicated topic, with multiple owners that repressed shitty discs from 3rd gen, poorly mastered tapes, that 35mm tape situation with tapes going bad, Hoffmann's repressing efforts with DCC (probably the best of the new reissues), and then the loss of all the 1st gen tapes in a warehouse fire! Even when Belock owned the operation, the first issues were on terrible vinyl and were then repressed on better, quieter vinyl, probably the best ones to own. A good Everest record is quite nice sounding, but what a minefield to maneuver thru to find the good ones, been doing that for years!
