Kinda apple to oranges, both of those tables have some variation of a standard spindle bearing. The one in question in this thread does not. The Platine Verdier (sp?) also has a magnetic platter suspension, but also with a spindle bearing...

There are a decent amount of magnetically suspended or assisted TT but ALL have spindles/bearings. I think most are assisted, as in the magnets reduce the overall load placed on the bearing.

FYI all.

Here is one magnetic suspension TT as one example:

Here is one air bearing TT as one example:

The spindle keeps it centered and plumb. In my opinion, any claims to a non-spindled TT is bull-shit. Think about it. You cue the record and the damn thing would wobble. Plus the center of gravity would change as the tonearm travels to the center. And how would they compensate (assuming the more obvious issues are resolved) for different tone arms and cartridges in terms of their mass and tracking force? The variables are infinite. Plus -- the motor drive -- HOW? Speed control -- HOW? Overcoming inertia and hysteresis -- HOW?

Frankly I believe that WEBsite raising invention money is nothing more than a scam. Maybe the "inventor" is using Unobtanium in a constant bath of liquid nitrogen. WOO-HOO!

Besides -- a well-executed thrust bearing gets the job done. My Denon DL-59L needs an electronic brake to stop. If I shut the power off, rather than hit the stop button while it is running, it takes close to three minutes for it to finally stop.

It's always fun to speculate -- like why in the hell are we still rockets to leave Earth? Why not anti-gravity? :confusion-confused:

Keeping it centered should be fairly easy. Plumb is a whole 'nother can of worms....

Let's not even get into how all those magnetic fields are going to interact with your cartridge, unless you do something like a strain guage... Heaven forbid you should have any magnetic materials in your tonearm :angry-banghead:

If you look at the second video very carefully concentrating on the head she'll you see it wobbling ever so slightly. If this thing is real there must be an optical feedback system trying to keep the platter stable

HOLY magnetic field Batman!! Roscoe is right!! Moving coil, moving iron, and moving magnet cartridges could get into major trouble with the proposed beast. Strain gauge, optical like the DS Audio product, and electrets like the Micro-Acoustics product would be required.

Hmmm. Are we engineering the beast for those folks as we go?

Don't we expect the magnetic-suspension field to cause some interaction with the cartridge? If our cartridge output is fractions of a millivolt, I'd think a magnetic field strong enough to suspend a platter would swamp a musical signal.

 Just thinkin'.

I think we already covered that ;)
