Good deal I learned about on a woodworker forum...linked from an audio forum.

Closeout on 26.3W x 17.5D x 1.25H butcher blocks tops made out of genuine mystery wood. Some say rubber tree, who cares? They'll work.

Only $19.95. Had to order pickup in store, no shipping.

Is this better than plywood?

Well, that depends on the goals in mind

It is probably more massive, easier to finish, and better looking semi-raw. Hopefully flatter than most ply.

Also cheaper than BB ply at Woodcraft for equivalent volume. These are 1.25 thick.

Finally, the size is about right for motor unit + 12" arms. The last two plinths I built worked out ~ 22x17.

Got one TT planned that will fit nicely on half a sheet of that butcher block. A stack of 3 or 4 slices would do it.

I just bought a 37 pound 1.75" sheet of blue cast Nylon 6-6 that might be "better" but that cost $150 at surplus pricing! This is for a Lenco top plate build with a Schick 12" that I want to look good and I think the hefty Nylatron slab should have good damping properties. Most importantly, it is cool.

Home Depot ply would be cheaper but it adds hours to the job clamping that stuff flat and filling the edges.
