I always try to keep the radiation pattern of the sections of the speaker above the sub the same. Once you get to the sub the wavelengths at those frequencies are so long compared to most room dimensions it doesn't matter. I originally had my RD75s in a dipole arrangement with a mid bass array in a sealed box. It did not work well. Now my mid bass array (six 10" Peerless CC line woofers in a vertical array) is also dipole and the results are much better.

I have REW on my htpc (ubuntu 14.04) and a calibrated mic from miniDSP. I should probably run a sweep above 500Hz. The problem is most evident in the upper range of the female voice. I especially notice it when they sing the Skye Boat Song in the introduction to the Outlander series on Starz.

Roy Allison did a lot of work with radiation patterns and the effect on reproduced sound. There is a great article on him by David Moran in the latest issue of the Boston Audio Society Newsletter.
