I figured we should have a thread where we can share something we recently heard that was worth passing on to others. Any musical genre, any format, either single piece or entire album, is welcome. Not really looking for audiophile approved stuff (well recorded music of questionable taste) but anything else is welcome! I'll start....

Cool jazz piano piece (and well recorded):

Calvary by Orrin Evans on the album "Captain Black"

Yes, this should be a regularly attended thread!

I'm disappointed when I search barnes and noble, or amazon, that it is relatively hard to find good live recordings.

I do most of my most important critical listening with live recordings, because they have so much more information in them than a studio cut.

Out of over 500 cd's I really only have about 8 good live recordings( if you don't count classical music of which I have maybe about 20 relatively good ones)

If anyone wants to post some lists, I will look into every one of them!

Chris

"Black Codes from the Underground" - W. Marsalis before he got all retro and stuff

"Black Pearl" - Blanchard & Harrison early album that is very evocative and impressionistic, one of my favorite of the newer jazz stuff

"Demon Dance" - Jackie Mac (McLean) releases "Bitches Brew" before Miles, and to me, much better!

"Fuego" - Donald Byrd before he went all soul jazz, some really great music, this is why Blue Notes are so popular...

LOL! There sure is some weird stuff out there. My first thought was this is a recently discovered Hieronymus Bosch?

Thanks Randy. I tried Demon Dance, pretty nice, I liked it well enough although it did not knock me out of my shoe. Could not get Black Pearl on Tidal but it sent me into a multi hour Terance Blanchard listening session! :)

Will try your other suggestions tonight!

Hey Roscoe,

That is a list. I am familiar with some of that (Eva, Ella, Terry, THs, Tedeschi/Trucks) but will have to try Dolphy, Mesekela etc. Thanks.
