Runcap are basically a fake phase.
Voltage should be minimum 370volt, but the mF should be exact, otherwise, you will burn the motor and its not that easy to replace.
All this discussion about $5...

Yea, I agree. This is a run cap not a start cap. I have replacement coming but it will be few days. Interestingly enough, replacement parts are pretty cheap and reasily available. Even a replacemnt blower costs less than $200.

I used to have a service contract with a local HVAC company. They surviced the AC unit (free visit with the yearly contract) and my wife called me at work to say they wanted to replace a motor cap, to which I replied 'go head". When I got home, I saw they charged my $80 for the run cap, $150 to install it. I cancelled the contract.

We had someone replace a cap in our outside unit for $250 (kinda' your spread,) and it went belly-up in 90 days. The company said that was the part's warranty, so we were screwed. I put one in myself.

which only goes to prove that many contractors and subs are crooks and that you MUST do your homework before engaging one for service. We had our AC go down last summer, I read a list of possible problems and then a list of GOOD, HONEST AC repair companies. He came out and I was there to ask him if it was the caps on the compressor that was the problem. He measured them while I watched on, and noted that yes, it was a bad cap. Cap was replaced, coolant was measured, and everything worked great afterwards. Charge was $75...

as long as you live in No Va, not sure if this guy's business goes out to the DC metro, but guessing it does. This does bring forth the issue that I see so much of, piss-poor to outright lying service people, seen so much of that in my neighborhood, and have also been a victim of same. And ebay electronics sellers, those cock knob estate buyers and the like that say "my tech went thru this and found it perfect, etc." what a bunch of liars, either that and/or their techs are one step from incompetent to just downright lying liars. I have been getting a number of pieces that I had to undo some jackass repair tech's works and then get it restored properly, this kind of sloppy shit that gets out into the general public just gives all the techs a bad name!

1. Where did you find this list? (or 'Where do we get these braims?')
2. You must not have had your wife bearing down on you because she was Hot (thermally, no jokes here.)

You're right - we didn't go back to that company, but getting a list of reputable workers without experiencing their work first is difficult.

Guy, I believe we used Angie's List, the service company was Shannon's, and Shannon himself drove out and repaired the unit, I stood by to watch and learn (and keep an eye on things). I checked out his firm online as well to get an idea of who I was dealing with, with my income so low, I check carefully as well as ask neighbors when they get work done. The only time we didn't, we got burned! And your right, Nancy was in no way going to allow that AC to go another day not working!
