Well egg on my face! the Innous was not serving up files from the NAS but from the internal SSD in the Innous.
It has some of the same albums that are on the NAS so when I took a quick look I assumed it was the NAS I was looking at.
The friend that gave me the Ultra, I gave him a copy of the 10TB library on a couple of 8TB USB drives and his Ultra scanned them (took quite a while) and he has not problem searching and playing albums and tracks. So the Ultra can handle this size of a library.
So I am back to square one and still poking around to see if I can get this to work.
The WiiM forum is a pain, but I will see if I have the patience to deal with it.

Thanks again.

BTW my RasPi had not trouble finding the NAS but you were right it did not have the HP to do a search.

Egg on my face AGAIN!!!!

I just rebooted the NAS again(I have done this numerous times during this process), and the NAS share popped up.
I just about had to change my underwear

Paul,

You really need to have a single Music Server that can index and maintain your library that is accessible to your streaming devices. If you are not willing to pay for something like Roon (or Audivana, or similar), or set up a DLNA or Lyrion server on the NAS that does this, then it becomes a mess of network shared folders with indexing on each endpoint that has to be resync'ed whenever you add any music to your library.

I setup Roon a few years ago, and amid some occasional frustration, am happy to pay for it because it provides the management and integration of both streaming services and the local library to all Roon endpoints on the network. All the endpoints have to do is render the datastream to USB Audio, as selected by the controller (application on a tablet or smartphone). The Metadata and browsing interface it provides is a tremendous strength. It does need a dedicated computer to do this (Roon Core), but it takes the load off all the other devices.

The WiiM Ultra is Roon Ready, and works great as an endpoint, and I access Qobuz through Roon rather than use the WiiM interface.

Sorry, this doesn't help you with your immediate problem, and it does seems stupid to pay for something that is not doing anything other than allow you to play the music you own or rent.

David

I agree totally with Paul regarding Roon. I have been using it for quite a while and am very pleased not only with how it handles my internal files but also its function as a streamer. It is running on a Roon Nucleus Plus, only because I did not want to deal with setting it up on a device and dealing with updates. Roon pushes out the updates for the Nucleus so it is very easy to deal with. Roon suggested that the sound quality would be better from a separate device running Roon Bridge rather than the direct USB output from the Nucleus. I tried both and they are correct. To run the free Roon Bridge application, I purchased a refurbished high power HP desktop from Amazon for $220. Here is a link.

This PC also runs Audio Weaver when necessary to control parameter changes to my Danville dspNexus 2/8. The USB input on the Nexus can handle both the control software and audio input. BTW, it is the best DSP unit I have ever had.

My opinion, and it I just an opinion based on listening in non-double blind testing is that with digital music, every time I increase processing power, the sound improves. There are lots of people who disagree with me on that but that is what I have experienced. If you want to go the Roon and Roon Bridge route, I’d be happy to help.

Sorry guys I will pass on Roon. I do not like all the extra processing Roon does. I have heard it in comparison test running the same music with and with out Roon.
I do not believe in bells and whistles that distract from the music quality. I am a KISS person.

I will be happy with Qobuz and Internet radio on the WiiM

You can turn off all the processing which is what I did. The only thing left is selection of music, building play lists, acting as a streamer, and providing links to streaming radio stations all over the world. All the processing that is in my system is done by the dspNexus.

Paul:

Check this out:

AI Overview
Learn more
"Using Roon without processing" essentially means utilizing Roon primarily as a music library organizer and playback control center, bypassing most of its advanced audio processing features like volume leveling, DSP filters, and room correction, allowing your audio device to handle the sound reproduction with minimal intervention from Roon itself; effectively letting your dedicated audio hardware do the heavy lifting on sound quality.

More on Roon quality:

Sound quality
If you love music, you want it to sound as big, exciting, and lifelike as possible. Roon’s MUSE audio engine is designed to audiophile standards and gives you the best performance while still being easy to use.

Formats & encoding
Roon supports all major audio formats at the highest resolution. Enjoy up to 768kHz/32-bit PCM and DSD512 (stereo and multi-channel) in WAV, WAV64, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC (Apple Lossless), DFF, DSF, OGG, MP3, and AAC. If your gear can't handle a format, Roon transcodes content to play back at the best quality it supports.

Bit-perfect playback
Roon ensures that the audio signal from a source file or stream is reproduced exactly as it was recorded, without any loss of quality or alteration of the signal. Our MUSE audio engine supports bit-perfect playback of lossless and lossy file formats, including high-resolution audio content like PCM and DSD, in both stereo and multichannel.

To deliver bit-perfect playback, Roon checks your audio hardware's capabilities and adjusts its settings accordingly. This includes adjusting the sample rate and bit depth to match the hardware's specifications and ensuring that the audio is transmitted using the appropriate protocol, such as ASIO or WASAPI.

All is good.
I uninstalled the multimedia server and rebooted the NAS reinstalled the DNLA multimedia app, reconfigured it to find the share and waited for the database build and it showed up with no problems on the WiiM. Music is searchable and plays fine.

I still say no to RooN, even it was for free. Its too much, too big, too complex for me.

Look I have not bought a new album or CD in two years. I have over 44k albums on the NNAS (over 330,000 tracks). More music i could ever listen too in my lifetime if I was 16 years old, now that I am approaching 80 I do not think I need any more. Last year I sold off my LP and CD collection only keeping 100 each of must haves. I do not need or want more.

Then there is Qobuz.
