HQPlayer is included in GentooPlayer.

The HQPlayer renderer component (Network Audio Daemon) is included in gentooplayer. HQPlayer itself costs $260.

I was showing that there isn't a lot of horse power needed for upsampling, at least for PCM.

My PC was able resample all PCM sources, even 24bit/192Khz, without an issue. It was also able to handle DSD64 sources. However, on DSD128 sources, it choked.

Perhaps it's the software that's causing the problem.

Depending on where the files are being pulled from and/or sent to, it could also be an ethernet issue.

PCM->DSD conversion is more computationally intensive. When I tried using Roon's DSP capabilities, upsampling PCM to 176kHz/24bit from 44kHz/16bit only loaded up my NUC7i5 a few percent. However converting to DSD128 loaded up the CPU considerably.

Not at all. I was able to play DSD512 without any issues. With the resampler plugin enabled, CPU core saturation occurs or DSD128 and higher.

What's the point of converting PCM to DSD?

C'mon Dave, some folks think it sounds better in their system. It's a hobby. :-)

For some, the point would be to bypass all the filters and resampling built into your DAC.

Sending DSD to your DAC may result in different filters being applied, but you're not going to have none....

Grover, et. al.,

Yes, particularly if the DAC accepts a DSD stream natively, you can then process PCM using better conversion method than what is built into silicon.
