Grover,
I have McIntosh and ARC in 6L6. Do you know if they can take the extra heat?

The McIntosh 240 takes 4 6L6s, 2 per channel
The ARC takes 8 6L6s, 4 per channel.

And by ARC I meant Audio Research. It's in a box, so I can't tell you the exact model number.

There are a number of good reports of using Gold Lion KT66's in the 240, with no overheating problems and nice sound. You can google it. The ARC, I don't know, that's 2.4 amps more current and might be a problem. Other interesting 6L6 variants are the Tung-Sol 7581a, a very nice, well-balanced tube and very affordable. Also the new Tung-Sol 6l6G, in a coke-bottle envelope, is a nice tube with a vintage look but rated the same as a 6L6GC. They're about the same price as the KT66.
