I suppose Glen Gould belongs to the vinyl age so I am not too far off the topic, but this video of getting AI to recreate the Glen Gould style is interesting.

You might follow up with AI playing Black Midi music. Beware, it starts off very loud.

Getting back to CDs decreasing in popularity, it is really not too surprising since the CD is only a convenient storage and delivery of bits. Streaming is just an improvement, particularly in delivery, which is similar to one of the advantages of the 33 rpm record over the older 78.

Interesting! For that matter, there's a series of albums on Tidal (and Qobuz, I believe) called Welte Mignon Mystery. For those who are not familiar with it, the Welte-Migon was a recording piano developed at the turn of the last century. Unlike standard piano rolls, the Welte-Mignon had metal rods connected to the piano keys. These rods dipped into a trough of mercury under the piano, and the electrical impulses generated by the depth of the connected preserved the touch and dynamics of the performer. The resulting piano rolls had a separate dynamics track on one edge. The playback device was extremely complicated. At any rate, you can hear Debussy, Reinecke, Saint-Saens and other composers performing their music in modern sound. It's quite amazing.

Years ago, I visited the International Piano Archives at College Park. I can't remember if they had a Welte Mignon piano but they did have an Ampico. The bloke in charge at the time, Donald Manildi, played some of the famous pianists who produced Ampico rolls such as Joseph Levine and Rachmaninov.

If you have never heard Levine, try

It was interesting to see the keys going up and down and it looked like he had the normal 10 fingers.

Rachmaninov was totally different. He had enormous, powerful hands and it looked like he had 10 fingers on each hand.

The curator asked how I became interested in classical piano music and I told him that when I was 17 I went to a concert where Tamas Varsary played a Beethoven Concerto and became hooked. He then told me that Tamas had been there the day before recording on the Yamaha player piano. I missed out on being able to thank the man. I remember that he wore the most highly polished patent leather shoes I had ever seen.

Sorry, I got carried away.

Vasary is a vastly underrated pianist. I love his Brahms piano quartets and Chopin.
