If they would put it in an external package, it would probably be decent for a cheap DAC.

Actually, AKM AK4493 based DACs from Topping and others are $100 cheaper than this card. Not sure what the appeal of a soundcard is these days for audiophiles. Gamers are another matter, which is what the card seems to be principly marketed to.

Quality sound cards are used in HTPCs a lot.

This card is also an A/D so you can rip your vinyl or anything else laying around. I suspect it sounds quite good. I used the Asus Xonar Essence ST sound card for quite a while and it gave a lot of very well respected DACs a run for their money.
