Hey all,

A friend is looking to move his 604-8gs from the 612c that they are currently in, to a pair of Stonehenge style cabinets.

I can build utilitarian stuff that looks Ok slathered in gray paint, but not nice looking stuff for the living room...

Anyone have a recommendation on a local speaker cabinet builder?

Thanks,

KC

There are two in this group that I know of -- Paul Elliott and Tom Perazella. I can provide the construction drawings from the Altec Engineering reference book.

Other than that there was a custom furniture guy in Ellicott City that was awesome but two floods in a row trashed his business. There may be others that may have a WEB presence.

You might contact Vu Hong of Deja Vu Audio (McLean, Virginia) to find out who he has used. He has had some superb furniture-grade speakers at shows using vintage Western Electric components.

There is another good speaker builder in this group not mentioned by Walt. I sent him a note with a link to your request. He's built some very nice speakers over the past few years including these beautiful clones of a vintage JBL 4 way monitor.

I have a friend who has a pair of Exemplar Audio speakers with the GPA 604s that are similar to the Stonehenge cabinet. He loves them.

How much do all those cabinets cost?

The JBLs are diy clones as mentioned, so......

The Exemplars are commercially made. I thought the OP might be looking for something like these to clone for his drivers.

Those Exemplars cabinets sure are beautiful - but man, $35,000/pair?

For the amount of work that went into those JBLs, I sold them cheap. If I recall, I think it was something around $3,300.

They had newly reconed JBL 2245H and 2122H, by a factory-authorized JBL shop - with cones made in the USA. Tack on the price of 2405H + Mid-Lense+horn+2426H driver - plus charge-coupled crossovers - it was getting very close to $2,250 - $2,500 in electrical parts. The enclosure was also built with 1" MDF and heavily braced inside + plus can't remember if it was 1 or 2 sheets of Premium A Grade Walnut Veneer. I think by the time it was all said and done, I had very close to $3,300 in total build material.

There has to be somewhere to acquire speaker cabinets that are more than plywood and spray paint, but not cost as much as a pair of complete high end speakers.

Agree. The Stonehenge are rather large, and I would imagine would require 5-6 sheets or Baltic Birch plywood, which around where I live costs $73/sheet. There has got to be a woodshop that can get it much cheaper.

Not too difficult of a build - bust just awkwardly large.

Those cabinets would be considered custom by any shop. The equation always is:

Custom = $$$$$$$$$$

Material is not the only part of the equation. There is learning and set up time, possibly the construction of special fixtures requiring time and material that will never get used again, the chance for expensive errors because of unfamiliarity, and lost opportunities due to the extensive time to learn about a custom job.

There are lots of speaker cabinets out there, both assembled and in kit form. Will they work for that particular speaker? Probably not. Check ebay, Parts Express and Iwistao.
