It's apparent that you may have other issues other than running Windows 7. Some of the 7 updates for security messed up apps like IE, Word and Excel. Defraging your hard drive on a regular basis can put things back in order that otherwise can cause problems with normal function. Housecleaning the Registry is also important especially when you have conflicts with Dynamic-link libraries (DLL) -- the result is confusion and many times the result is no action. Re-booting helps but not all of the time. CPU speed (I don't know what you are running) has direct impact on "number crunching" -- that is what computers do. Hard drive speed is especially important if you don't have enough RAM because when the computer runs out of RAM it looks to the hard drive for virtual memory. Sufficient hard drive storage. Sufficient RAM - -Windows 7 seems to run fine on 8-gBytes. Windows 10? It is a RAM drunk -- it will use whatever you have and want more.

It just dawned on -- I (we) thought you were in the industry and worked in a server farm. ??? Don't you come across these issues in your job? :confusion-confused:

I am a third part vendor who replaces hardware on Nutanix, Veritas, Cisco/Cisco UCS, Tintri, and Ciena. Mostly memory, hard drives, nodes, and line cards. I don't log into devices. Customers do that, and that is fine with me.

Good advice! Believe me -- I had to upgrade my PC almost at gunpoint. I had a good base to work with, but in order to run Windows 10 as well as my computer ran 7, I had to upgrade my SSD C: drive to 1-Tbyte (my D: drive was already 1-Tbyte), install 32-Gbyte of RAM up from 8, and to add insult to injury -- 10 would not support not only my monitor that I had to replace, but I had to install a new video card as well. WTF?! :x Luckily my printers and scanner worked fine without going through some pain.

Thinking about an Asus laptop as a Christmas present.

I will still try and play around with this old desktop.

If you are just playing around, then why don't you just install Linux on it. It will run great on older hardware and you will have a much more secure system than running an unsupported OS. Yes, there is a learning curve, but learning is a good thing, and there is loads of support on the internet. Upgrading to Windows 10 will be much more frustrating.
