Does anybody connect network cables, phone cables, or coaxial cables through a fancy power strip if it has it?

No. Why would you want to run low level signals through a device made to distribute 120VAC? Bad idea, and there's no benefit even if the power strip isn't plugged into an outlet.

Talking about those APC/Trip-lite power strips that have ports for all that stuff. I never have connected network cables, phone cables, nor coaxial cables through them, so I wanted to know the consensus was.

I have never used them either. Like Dave I try to keep power and low voltage lines separate. You can get standalone surge arrestors for RJ45 connections. They range from cheap that would be as good as the power strip ones to more expensive that use gas discharge tubes instead of MOVs for protection.

If you are using any devices that use POE (Power Over Ethernet) make sure the arrestor handles that.
