Next year my wife and I will be making our move to Australia between April and August. The permanent resident visa for my wife came through. Over the next few weeks, I will post some questions that hopefully will be of interest.

The first involves power conversion. Electricity in Oz is 240 50 hz and I thinking of purchasing several of something like this for some of our US appliances we wish to take with us as well as my amps.

I am curious how they work since they mention a regenerated sine wave. Presumably, there is not just a step-down transformer. Any ideas?

A quick health update. The wonderful news is that I am well on the way to recovery. Six months ago I could barely walk and now I can walk 3 miles including steep hills, climb steps and approach a toilet seat without fear and dread that I will not be able to stand up. I went to Johns Hopkins and was diagnosed with a very rare case of statin-induced myopathy. The cure is IV IG and it has worked miracles over the past three months. It is an amazing feeling to progressively feel your body recover its strength. The doctor who prescribed the treatment is the bloke who co-wrote the paper on it. If you read the paper, my CK level was similar to one of the subjects at over 8000.

By the way, if you know somebody who is having increasing trouble walking and they take statins, tell them to talk to their doctor about the statin. In some cases, taking an alternative may help.

Glad to hear your health is back!

I remember an article in Sound Practices where a DIYer was using 220v direct into PS without power transformer. Sounded a bit dangerous to me but sort of a neat idea.

What are your amps (models). If they are home made see if you have a 240v primary on the power transformer or get a power transformer with a 240v primary. My Emotiva amps autoswitch between 240 and 120. I run the power amp on a 240v line.

No power transformer is not a route that I would care to take.

I home build. Yes, I have some transformers that work on both 220 and 110. However, I have been rethinking how to do my amplifier building in future and I have become more interested in stacking 48 volt SMPS units which I did in my GK71 amp. No more boat anchor amps for me. So I may be giving away some 110 volt power transformers before I leave.
