My guess is that the omni type of speaker would behave the best in a large room where the walls would be far enough away that the reflections would arrive late so as not to muck up the coherence of the sound. The biggest problems with early reflections would still be the ceiling and floor.

Coincidentally, this bluetooth speaker came to my attention - I think maybe they're using a similar reflector at the bottom?
