So I watch a few YouTubes of surface mount soldering with hot air rework machines and I ordered one of the favorites, along with some tools and solder paste. Also a fee practice boards from China

Here are two links. One is for how to use a reflow station and the other is for info on a station very similar to the one I have. The difference when working with SM devices is often their leads are too close together to work with a traditional iron even with a small tip. It is too easy to move the device on the pad while soldering and also to get solder bridges.

Instead of regular solder you put a paste made of powdered solder and flux across the pads and place the device on the pad. The hot air melts the solder and flux and the solder wicks to the leads. I'm also including a photo of a board I built for a speaker protection network as an example of the soldering distances on some of the SM devices. A dime is in the photo for size reference. The SM device shown is a complete RMS to DC converter.
