I have a turntable with a built in preamp (line level output). I wish to play my records through the line input of my sound card. Is there an app with a volume control that make doing this simple. It could be either win 10 or ubuntu.

In Windows you should be able to go to the dialog for audio and select the listen check box for the sound card. In Windows 7, you would right click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand corner, select recording devices, then the line in for your sound card, the Properties, then the Listen tab and select Listen to this device.

If you just want to listen to them, what DaveR said will work fine. If you want to record them on your PC, then look no further than http://www.audacityteam.org/

I use Audacity to rip records, it works quite well. A bit labor intensive if you want to label tracks, but not too bad for most albums. The Firebird Suite by Dorati and the LSO was a challenge with 22 tracks and the only obvious break between tracks was between side one and side two.

I have know about audacity for quite a while. I just don't feel like ripping several hundred records. The best answer I have found on linux is to use ecasound to route the input to the output by running a script. The problem there is stopping ecasound when you are done listening without using something using something ugly like cntrl-C cntrl-Z on the terminal window. I was hoping that someone had written a program (linux or win 10) that has an visual interface with a volume control. Is there an audio/video server that can accept line in as input steam?

What you want works in Windows using the method I described. You use the Windows master volume, or one just for that input. My "servers" are just Windows PCs. So, yes, they do what you want.

Three years ago I saw the SugarCube from Sweet Water demoed at Axpona.
They were showing a prototype for ripping records that recognizes the record played and records the music digitally, separate the tracks, fill in all track info and capture album covers.
I spent a long time talking with Dan Eakins, the developer, and bought into the beta testing.
Well it took over two years to get the unit, which records at 24/192 flak, recognizes the album, but we are still waiting for metadata software. Dan keeps promising "next month" but this has been going on since the summer.
The noise, pop and click removal feature is unremarkable

I do click and pop removal manually. They are easy to see, I just zoom in, highlight the spike and delete it. I can't tell that it's been done other than there is no noise.

To bad Shazam is no longer on PC's.

Would have been easy to get the metadata for the album as it is recording.

That album recognition on the Sugar Cube works really well. Once the album starts to play, the box via Internet sends info back to Sweet Water database. The server starts sending back a listing of all the albums the song is on. I suppose once the solfware is complete you will just pick the proper alblum and the data will come down.
I know bringing a product to market is tough, but it's been so long that I am beginning to feel that this is vaporware
