I'm starting with passive (ugh) but will move to active later when time permits for a direct comparison.

Unless your system is voiced properly with passive crossover components, any comparison with active crossover would be moot point. In my experience, the capacitors in crossovers make a huge difference. I suspect, cheapest active crossover will do well compared to passive crossover with Dayton caps.

I got the eggs and bases today back from painting and had time to assemble one of the eggs. I have the other egg, the bases, and the crossover housings yet to finish. If any of you are going to the DC HiFI Group meeting Sunday it will be there.

I was trying to steer you away from those Dayton caps. They are horrible in any application yet you guys still insist on using them. Did you ever wonder why they are so damn cheap?!

You can't judge the quality of those speakers with Daytons. I was going to hook you up with mil-spec polycarbonates similar to what I used in the B&W crossovers.

You might have second thoughts about electronic crossovers if you do.

This is a subject for another thread but last year a few of the group did a double blind test of passive crossover caps at David Berning's house with some expensive caps there were rated very highly against some that were rated as worse than crap. No one could tell the difference in that test.

Another thing is that using active eliminates the caps, inductors, and resistors. THere is nothing to get in the way between the amp and drivers. You can also do lots more like time alignment, etc with active. BTW, each driver in this system was individually measured and the values of the crossover components individually matched to the drivers.
