DAC Advice

May 20th, 2017, 10:50 pm

Now that my dual AK4495 DAC is putting out just noise, went back to the AK4490 DAC.
AK4490 is a good DAC, its background is darker but it lacks the dynamics and resolution of dual Ak4495, especially with Burson opamps. Too bad I didnt get to experience it longer.

At some point I would like to try the dual chip DAC again, but for now decided to build the AK4497 DAC from DIYINHK.

Couple of questions:
1. DIYINHK does not seem to offer COAX input option. Is it possible add later from a third party source?
2. DIYINHK has several power supply regulator options, from $15 to $60.
At these regulators with "hybrid choke coil" make a desernable difference?

Over on diyaudio, there is a large group buy underway for Iancanada's I2S Fifo and SPDIF kit. One of the options is an SPDIF receiver that outputs I2S. That seems like a good option for your desire to have a coax input.

There are many options and it's a bit overwhelming trying to read through all of the material but someone has put together a wiki that summarizes things nicely.

No connection with the group buy other than having bought some of the parts, but still waiting to find time to integrate it with one of my dacs.

Thanks. I ordered a AK4118 based I2S to SPDIF board from ebay. Under $30.
