New OB prototypes....

July 4th, 2016, 4:39 pm

Time to play again with a new set of open baffle prototypes. These are setup for side-by-side drivers, with the Dayton Audio IB-15 woofer and a range of other drivers. First up is a pair of Tannoy 12" drivers from some late-model small commercial enclosures.

I'm also planning to try a pair of B&C 12" coaxials that I have, and the 15" Urei coaxials that I've used before. After that, I'll move to two of the IB-15s and a few different 8" full-range drivers in the gap above the 15s...

Since you are interested in open baffles the following link shows where you can get replacement woofers for the Carver original amazing loudspeaker if you want to built a Carver type open baffle woofer/subwoofer. Each panel in the Carver speaker had four 12 inch woofers -

My user manual for the Carver speakers includes the theory and analysis for his open baffle woofers (small magnet, low resonance, small moving mass, long travel). If anyone is interested I can scan that section and post it.

The only problem I had with the woofer section of the Carver speakers is that at some low frequencies (the woofer crossed over at 150 Hz) the panels would move back and forth causing doppler (IM) distortion with the ribbons. A more rigid support system for the panels would fix that problem.
