Re: Open Baffle Planar servo sub speaker project

I had a pair of Decca ribbons many moons ago and performed the exact same surgery with RTV silicone (GE) that improved their performance. Just a little dab gets the job done but not directly opposite from each other and not equidistant. The rules of logarithms is effectively applied here.

I have not examined Paul's ribbons that way but can attest to the sound reproduction that was quite good. There did not seem to be any anomalies related to possible suspension issues or resonances.

But then -- not all ribbon speakers are created equal.

The scheme you mentioned with the RTV is what Sequerra did. It is the same for braces in speakers. You don't want symmetry when taming resonances. It's also the same as staggering drivers on speaker front plates to get different distances to the edges and minimize diffraction. Nature works pretty much the same in many areas.

OH my yes! When I was running my Acoustats I got audible improvement with the rear grille cloth and tacking it down to the wood framing using upholstery tacks playing the log game.

Glad I do not have to deal with any of those problems.

Now to see what happens 17 August.

Modified the crossover points between the servo subs and Neo10's. Like the new setup.

Then ran Room EQ with the CSL calibrated Dayton Audio UMM-6 mic. Used the 45 degree offset calibration data since the mic is pointing mid way between the speakers for both channel measurements for correction. Worked very well.

I am happy until all the things needed to get the tweeter arrays running are done. Have really no idea when that will happen.

Now for some music listening.

Discussed ribbon tweeters with Greg Takesh and he is going to make me 8 - 20" ribbon tweeters for the Megaliths. They will fit in the slot already built and have 5-way binding posts for speaker cable connections.

Will still drive pairs of them with the time domain beamformer as originally planned once the 16 channel unit is ready.

Not sure I will ever see the BG Neo3-PDR's from PE. This should work out nicely.

Isn't it great when things work out in unexpected ways ;)

The ribbon tweeter build started today. Will be a few weeks for the metal work to be done and drivers built.

you certainly cannot go wrong with Greg's work
