Acoustic Panels

Based on a request in the thread about my speakers, I'm starting a thread about how to build your own panels.
Supplies: insulation batts such as Corning 701, 703, or Roxul; furring strips of appropriate size to the insulation thickness used; wood glue; screws; spray glue; and acoustically transparent fabric (you can get speaker grill cloth or use the "wind test" by holding your hand behind it and blowing through the fabric).
Tools: tape measure, saw of any type, drill, and staple gun.
The build process is to first cut the appropriate lengths of furring strips to build frames that will go around the insulation. Glue and screw these pieces together.
With the frame built, attach fabric to the back using staples. Trim the excess after stapling.
Spray glue into the back fabric to keep the insulation from slumping (depending on insulation used, you may be able to skip this step) and fit the insulation into the frame.

Place your chosen fabric for the front on the floor upside down with the panel on top of it. Wrap the sides around and staple down.
The final step is to screw in some eyes to the back about 1/4 to 1/3 distance from the top and stretch picture wire between them. Determine placement, hang, and enjoy better sound. Here's the way mine looked when first built with a different room arrangement before getting married. That's right, I was allowed to keep these up in the apartment after getting married.

Great pictures, and a good discussion of construction. Plus I hadn't heard of spoonflower.com before, which look intriguing - maybe I can put up some pictures like you did instead of blank panels!
And you have a very understanding wife - you should let her know, and you are lucky to have her!

I am lucky to have her. She's a sci-fi fan too. If she wasn't, they probably would have had to come down.
