How resonant is the wood? Does it seem pretty dense, or does it ring like a bell?

It's pretty dead, very hard maple. The 36"x60"x1.75" piece weighs about 105lbs... You'll have to check it out the next ime we have a meet at my place.

A couple of things

There are some work benches at Sams that are around 100. Very nice maple butcher block style. Might be a decent idea for down the road.

Also- I have a Kreg setup, and would be happy to help you get some together if you would rather join some maple lumber. If you get it from a real lumberyard, the quality is nice, and its not hard to join them.

Not critiquing at all, just an offer to help if you ever would need some.

The stereo rack looks great! I must say I have wanted to make one since I saw one a few years ago.
Question - is that 3/4 inch rod, and how much was each rod, each washer and each nut (so I can price one myself)

I'm pretty sure Stuart's rack is made with 1" threaded rod. (Frightening, I know.)
At McMaster Carr, a 6-foot length of 1"-12 medium-strength steel rod is $60. You can find prices for for bolts, metal washers, and rubber washers to go with them.

I was thinking of building a 4' rack instead of something taller. 4' of 3/4"-10 medium-strength steel rod is $14 each;3/4"-16 is $24 each.
I could be wrong, but 3/4" seems strong enough to me, and the price drops enough that I could make a pair of side-by-side stands with 3 or 4 legs each that are more manageable - you saw the weights they're dealing with.

If you are going to use raw steel rod and fasteners, after you assemble it you might want to apply some EEZOX rust preventitive. It is the best rust preventative I have ever used. Don't believe the hype about it being the best cleaner and lubricant as well because it is not. However in my testing it beat out Barricade, WD40, Mobil One synthetic, and others. It also does not leave an oily residue. I use it on all my firearms and anything else where I want to be sure that there will be no rust.
