I might be a little less enthusiastic about using it for shelves. Not because I don't think it'd sound good, but soapstone is very soft, and scratches quite easily. If you change gear quite often as I do, it might get to looking bad (and creating dust which could get placed you don't want) fairly quickly. It may be that there's something you could use as a sealer on the top of the shelves, I'd imagine that'd pretty much be necessary for kitchen counters made of soapstone, but I don't really know...

I hear you Roscoe but they use this stuff for counter tops and sinks and even pavers so it has to be a bit tough, or tough enough for HiFi gear

I'd long wondered about the desire for rim drive tables. After all my first tables were all rim drive and all I could hear was the rumble from the drive. These were cheap tables, later in the Garrard line.

Found this article. Hopefully, some of you may find it as informative as did I.

I really like my Jelco SA-750E arm, which is available in a 12 in version (SA-750L). It is not vintage, but a good performer that I think would hold its own. At around $600, it is hard to beat.

I've got a couple 3009s around collecting dust, so I ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SME-3012-tonearm-wand-SME-3009-12-upgrade-to-SME-3012-compatible-with-SME-3009-/182029072367.

Wiring the new arm-tube should be the hardest part of the job. If it doesn't work out, I'll always be able to buy a Jelco.

Maybe I should get off my lazy butt and actually build a Ladegaard arm

I would think you shouldn't have any trouble. Sounds like a neat project, and there a loads of parts and upgrades to get an SME back up and running and better than new.

Yeah, the Ladegaard arm would also be a nice project, but then there is the air compressor, the air reservoir, finding a place to the compressor out of the listening area, etc. Not to mention the meticulous leveling needed. There is a reliable simplicity about pivoted arms.
