Found a pair of Magnepan MG10QR's that were very inexpensive and since I had MGIIB's back in the '80s, decided to give them a try with the dspNexus 2x8 DSP crossover.

The MGIIB's had an upgrade to do a passive line level biamp system for the woofer and tweeter panels. Did that with a good sound quality increase. Problem was a ~6KHz peak in response that the Hafler DH330 equalizer could tame, but did not sound very good in the system making the correction. We now have much better ways to actively correct response aberrations.

The system will also have a pair of servo subs for the response below 80Hz that the MG10QR's have from the specs. My favorite pairing is servo subs with planars, so this should be interesting.

The sensitivity is rated at 86dB/1W/1m, so going to try the new Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra DIY amps with generic 1kW SMPS per monoblock as they will double power from 250W into 8 Ohms to 500W into 4 Ohm loads. I like the way Leo's GaN Class D amps sound with planars like the LM10n's in the Magnetar II's.

If this works out, then it would be the setup to bring to CAF2023 in Nov. Gary has standard size rooms available, so have asked for one for the show. Room size is 13ft x 20ft, bigger than the 15ft x 15ft room for LSAF.

If you are strong (100 lbs) and want to try it I have an Emotiva XPR-2

Power Output (rated power; THD < 0.1%):
600 watts both channels driven into 8 Ohms.
1000 watts both channels driven into 4 Ohms.

brombo,
Thanks for the offer! :)

I have the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra monoblocks ready to try with the MG10QR's. Just have to get the fanless SMPS wired up to the amp modules.

How do the Orchard Audio Starkrimson Ultra monoblocks compare to the Icepower boards available from Parts Express?

No clue,
I have the original Starkrimson GaN 150W Monoblocks and used them at the LSAF show. The folks coming to the room said it had the best sound at the show. Tells me I do not need to compare to anything else. The DIY Strakrimson Ultra's are 250W and will be trying them with the MG10QR's as they like higher power amps.

To try out the MG10QR speakers with the DSP crossover will be using the Orchard Audio DIY Pizza Box Amp v2.1 with the DIY Starkrimson Ultra amp boards with the new 1kW fanless SMPS. The Starkrimson Ultra amp modules should do well on the bass panels and the original Starkrimson Monoblocks on the Quasi-Ribbons. Yes, the 4A FB fuses will stay in place and one added to the QR's.

Next is to mod the MG10QR's to allow direct access to both the woofer panel and QR's for connection to the amps.

The dspNexus 2x8 DSP crossover design is done and will be ready when the speaker mods are complete.

Here is the Orchard Audio DIY Starkrimson Ultra monoblock modules I am using with the Mean Well +/-36V @ 1000W smps. Just two Mean Well 36V@500W SMPS in series to get the dual supply.

One thing I really like about the GaN boards is the simpler SMPS design than most other Class D amps. Most seem to need a multi voltage SMPS for operation that increases complexity. That is not the case with the Ultra DIY modules. Just the dual supply.
