If you were truly fanatical you could put six fifty Ohm coaxial cables in parallel to make a 8.33 Ohm transmission line to match your speaker impedance. For a 16 Ohm speaker only three fifty Ohm cables in parallel would be needed.

Not much to be gained matching impedance at audio frequencies where the cable length is <<< less than a wavelength.... Wavelength of heliax at 30kHz is 8km, proportionally longer as you go down in frequency....

Amen to that. Also, impedance matching assumes that you have the same impedance at the sending end as receiving end. Total mismatch with power amps and speakers. Also the speaker impedance is all over the place when using passive crossovers.

Somehow I expected you to go there. A well-designed passive crossover with damping is linear and and well controlled. Manufacturers of super high-end speakers such as Wilson and Magico (as but two examples) would not think of screwing with the sound of their speakers with electronic crossovers and direct drive. Wilson had the advantage of having Spectral and some others to help deal with electronic crossovers with the mandate being cost-no-object. They passed.

No so fast -- we haven't seen Tom's response yet.

Either way will work, passive or active. I have hear great iterations of each. It depends on how well it is implemented. The number of speakers being built now days with active are growing much faster than passives. That is primarily because building a good passive is much more expensive, especially if you try to include corrections for driver anomalies. Most of the high end speakers are still using passives because the golden ears would not think of letting anyone provide an amplifier for them. How would they then be able to forever do their mandatory tweaking and amp swap outs?

See -- I told you -- you needed to wait for Tom's response. :D

Thank god for the golden ears. Our preferences are expensive, which in turn support our DIY efforts. No doubt there are pretty good active speakers like the Dutch & Dutch 8c, Cabasse Pearl or Sphere, or B&W Formation Duo that are cost efficient and convenient. But the compromises and hassles of putting all your eggs in one basket when something fails or goes wrong - ugh. Letting someone provide Class D amps for my main speakers - ugh again, though these amps are relatively inexpensive. Let the Tube Gods save me from the human misery. :text-givemebeer:
