Music at long last

April 1st, 2021, 3:12 am

It's over a year since I packed up most of my stuff and moved to Australia. It's been a bit too hot to be comfortable in the bedroom which will become my listening area but finally, summer has ended and I got some music playing today. It's a jumble of stuff and there is a lot of tuning to do but at least I can stop listening through headphones.

The speakers are the very cheap Aussie Altronics 8" that I bought a couple of years ago. Somebody on an Aussie forum recommended them.

I tried them out in 2'x2' foam blanks from Lowes last year and I thought they showed promise. I have suspended them from bungee cords and run them naked. It's the same idea as what the UK bloke was doing with his PRV speakers and woofers in

The bass is handled by two bucket subwoofers which were mentioned in another thread a while ago.

Bass amp is an old Aragon 4004 and the upper is my 12HG7 / 6V6 amp in an Ikea candle holder that somehow survived the trip to Oz.

Xover is the same model Behringer CX2310 that Roscoe used a couple of years ago. DAC is the Khadas Tone 1.

It's going to be a less than ideal listening environment and there will be numerous problems to solve, but it did feel great to hear music pouring forth. I'll be gradually trying out some other speakers and amps over time.

The Roscoe 6550 amp is ready for testing which I will try to do over Easter.

You can’t get more OB than that!

Surf?

Look like a lake or a bay to me

A 200-mile long island lies offshore which means no surf unless a cyclone / hurricane comes into the area. The wind has to come from a specific direction for the waves to get high enough to surf.

The small waves do make noise however so I will never get a completely quiet environment for listening. The view more than makes up for that. I am a great believer in getting to 90% of perfection and enjoying the hell out of it.

Headphones will help with the wave noise.

I can still hear the waves when I put on my Sennheisers, so I would need closed back versions.

Ray,

What’s the theory behind suspending the the speakers by springs? Won’t the whole speaker oscillate in sympathy with the cone? What effect does the oscillating speaker have on wave generation?

If you read this link the bloke goes into some of his reasoning. Isolation from the floor appears to be part of it, particularly of the woofers.

I am also interested in weight and WAF issues. If I think it worthwhile, I will do different speaker stands that look better and not be too massive. I will see what I can do to make the buckets less visible.

And of course, I just like to try things out for the fun of it.
