Does anyone here wind their own crossover inductors? If so, any chance you post a picture of your setup?

Thanks,
D

For larger inductors I have disassembled power transformers for the cores and I make bobbins from the vinyl stuff they use for covering wood on outside house trim. It can be easily cut and it holds a bend. I then put it on a wooden form that I make slightly larger than the core so that once wound it can slip onto the core. I bend the sides up so that the wire does not rub on the core.

Thanks for responding David. Maybe I can come check out your setup some time :)

Hope you are doing well.

Here is one of the chokes that David helped me make for my VFET amp using the technique he described. If you need core material using old cores can work but can be a major pain in the behind to work with if there was some kind of sealant used on the original piece. I'm also including a link to a site I have used when determining how to make air core chokes.

I recently built some 4 pole Linkwitz-Riley crossovers and needed 2 each of 4 different value inductors. I considered making my own but ended up buying slightly higher value inductors from Parts Express and unwinding them until I got to the value I needed. I would go this route again - fast and easy.

That is how I did it when I made my xovers for the Maggie's, except I bought them from Madisound. Parts express was more expensive for 14ga

Another thing to consider is that if you are going to use L pads to attenuate some of the drivers consider adding just enough series resistance to the driver to bring the total impedance to the point where you can use a standard value inductor. You will then use less attenuation in the L pad. I did this with the tweeters in the eggs and this also balanced a slight impedance difference in the two tweeters so the crossover and L pad values were the same for both.
